Careers
Mesquite ISD’s Vanguard High School is shaping the
next generation of manufacturers by connecting
students with real-world experiences and industry
partners. Principal Clint Elsasser says more than
600 students are enrolled in programs such as
engineering, robotics, automotive, and welding,
昀椀elds that expose them to modern, high-tech
manufacturing careers.
“Students often picture manufacturing as dark and
dirty,” Elsasser says. “We’re working to change that
perception by showing them how advanced and high
tech the 昀椀eld has become.”
Vanguard emphasizes both technical and
employability skills. Students train on tools, 3D
printers, and robotic systems, earning certi昀椀cations
like Autodesk Inventor and several Industry 4.0
credentials. Soft skills such as teamwork and
communication are woven into every class.

The school works closely with local manufacturers
through advisory boards, internships, and the Dallas
College Manufacturing Sector Initiative. Still, Elsasser
notes that more partnerships are needed. “Industry
moves fast; education moves slow. We need more
昀氀exibility and less red tape,” he says.
Challenges include time, resources and 昀椀nding
quali昀椀ed instructors, which limits program capacity.
While resources like FAME (Federation for Advanced
Manufacturing Education) have been instrumental,
Elsasser notes that students who don’t enter such
programs sometimes struggle to 昀椀nd their footing in
the industry after graduation.
Looking ahead, Vanguard is exploring ways to
integrate AI into its curriculum and expand o昀昀erings
with electrical programs focusing on AC/DC motors
and other emerging technologies. “AI is reshaping
the industry,” Elsasser explains. “Our goal is to
prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow and
strengthen our local economy.”
